Waves - Photography Week 16 (2016)

Spending time in Cornwall and watching the weather forecasts has taught me a few surfing terms like messy and clean waves.

Clean waves break in one point and are presumably better for surfing. When waves are messy the break is irregular and hard to predict. I guess the direction of the wind plays a role in determining the type of wave.

Whilst waiting for the tide to fall on Godrevy beach, I did a spot of clean wave watching. It was totally captivating. As the waves rolled in they were breaking with backlighting from the sun and spray blowing from the crest.

To gain a few record shots I switched to a long 100-400mm telephoto lens and altered the camera's focus setting from "one shot" to "AI servo". AI servo tracks a moving subject and maintains the focus - it is a great camera feature that is easy to overlook or forget!
