White Edge - Photography Week 10 (2017)

White Edge runs parallel with Curbar and Froggatt Edges in the Peak District before turning towards the White Edge Lodge on the Longshaw Estate. It is one of the lesser known edges and is characterised by small outcrops of gritstone and boulder strewn moorland slopes.

Walking along White Edge from Curbar Gap provides views across moorland towards Higger Tor:

In the other direction, there are views of Stoke Flats, Curbar and Forggatt Edges and the Derwent Valley:

At the start of the walk, I decided to alter the camera's picture style, and hence the camera's live view, to monochrome. This change provided an opportunity to compose and capture the scenes in black and white. Later, I added a creative tone to the produce the images shown above and also this composition of the trees below White Edge.

Switching back to colour I recorded these views looking towards Higger Tor, the Grouse Inn, and Hathersage.

Finally, two record shots of the terrain on White Edge. The first looks towards the Longshaw Estate and the second towards the highest point of the edge which also includes a trig point.

Rock Studies - Photography Week 10 (2017)

The weather conditions conspired against my short trip to Cornwall with high winds for one of the free days and mizzle for the rest of the time.

Trying not to be put off by poor weather I headed for Dollar Cove near Gunwalloe only to be pelted by sea foam carried on the wind. The beach looked like an industrial quantity of soap powder had been tipped into the sea. Undeterred, I moved to plan B, photographing the rock formations on the beach with my back to the wind:

This second set was taken on the following day in the mizzle at Gyllyngvase Beach in Falmouth:

Both sets demonstrate the array of colours that can be found in the coastal rock formations in Cornwall. Even in poor weather conditions, it is one of the most absorbing and enjoyable subjects to photograph.   

The Lizard - Photography Week 10 (2016)

This is a set of photographs taken last year at  Lizard Point in Cornwall. The series starts with images of a sea stack called Bumble Rock and then the view towards Marconi's Bungalow (1) which sits on the cliff above Housel Cove:

The conditions were mainly bright for the visit with cloud building from a south-westerly direction often blocking the sunlight but occasionally breaking to highlight the cliff face. A shower was captured moving across the horizon near to Bumble Rock followed by two views of the old lifeboat station at Lizard Point:

As the cloud intensified attention turned to the shards of sunlight on the horizon:

Finally, the sunlight was lost for the evening with this final black and white conversion capturing more threatening conditions:

Falmouth - Photography Week 9 (2017)

A welcome return to Cornwall and the rock formations on the seafront at Falmouth. With only a couple of hours to spare for photography, rock abstracts were an obvious choice. These were some of the results:
